Who is Chris Marston?

Chris Marston joined Radio Broadland back in 1992 as the presenter of The Broadland Beat. This was followed by a stint on both the Late Show and Evening Show before Chris became the voice of Drive Time in 1999. Chris even became the Programme Controller at Radio Broadland for some time during 2003. Today, Chris is on the air from 4pm till 7pm every weekday afternoon with Drive Time on Heart East Anglia. The show includes frequently updated travel news from Victoria Mayo. You can also catch Chris on Sunday mornings presenting Chilled Sunday from 8am until midday.

The Interview

You've been at Radio Broadland and Heart for quite some time now, what shows have you presented so far?

Well, I've been lucky enough to have presented every show on the station at some point over the past 11 years. As far as the full time gigs, I took on the Broadland Beat back in 1992, then the Late Show from 1995 to 1996, I then presented the Evening Show from 1996 to 1997, the Hot 30 from 1997 to 1999 and then Drivetime from 1999 to the present. I also presented the Top 20 on a Saturday between 1995 and 1999 and then the Saturday Afternoon Show.

If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing today?

If I wasn't in radio I would probably be running a bar somewhere. Its still an ambition of mine. I ran our bar for about half and hour at the Norfolk Show this year and had a great time. The only down side would be that we would always be out of Vodka and Coke!

Have you ever said anything embarrassing on air during your time on air at Radio Broadland?

There have been quite a few over the years but I think the most embarrassing one was when I was doing the big draw for a "Windscreen to Widescreen" competition. I pulled out a sticker back which had, shall we say, not the neatest handwriting. I thought that the name was Vaughan - that's how it looked at first glance so I read out the name Vaughan Hogg only to then realise that it said Julian Hogg. Don't ask me how you can get Vaughan out of Julian! I was laughing so much on and off the air after I had realised what I had said I had tears streaming down my face.

Have you ever had to deal with any major technical problems? How did you manage to recover from them?

I have had both CD players pack up on me before on Drivetime. Our engineer was also off site that day so I had to swap the CD players over with some from Studio 3 whilst I was in an ad break.

How would you sum up your time at Radio Broadland in one sentence...?

Life has been a Rollercoaster.

Have you got any interesting stories about any of the people who have called in to your shows?

I had some bloke phone me and tell me he had some secret intelligence to say that Broadland 102 were working with Tony Blair to have this man 'removed' from the planet? I think he was already on a different planet!
