Who is Jono Abel?

Local boy Jono presented the 10 till 2 show on Radio Broadland for many years before becoming the station producer. He has also worked at Gold as both producer and presenter. I spoke to Jono during his time as the daytime presenter at Radio Broadland, check out the interview below.

The Interview

How long have you been at Radio Broadland?

I've been at the station for about 13 or 14 years now. I started off answering the phones with Dave Brown on the Sunday Morning Hitline.

What shows have you presented during your time at Radio Broadland?

I started off on overnights, I did that for a couple of years along with the old Saturday Late Show. I also did cover on all of the other shows including breakfast, which is always a nightmare as I have never been much of a morning person!

Have you worked at any other radio stations?

No, Broadland was my first real station. Although I did do Hospital radio for a few years. I started there when I was about 15.

Why did you drop "Jonathan" for "Jono"?

Well, it all started years ago when I was doing overnights with my old boss Dave Brown, he started calling me Jono in the office, others picked up on it too, then they started using it on air and for some reason so did I. It wasn't planned at all, it just kind of happened much to the annoyance of my Mum!

Have you ever done anything embarrassing on air?

Oh yeah! loads, the most recent two really stick in my mind though. I was back announcing a Dido track and, for some reason, I called her Dildo. I didn't even know that I had said it, it was only when I looked up and noticed Rob Chandler and my boss at the studio window with shocked looks on their faces mouthing DILDO! I thought that was going to be my last show! I just burst out laughing mid link, the phones were jammed with callers, not one complaint though they were all wetting themselves.

...anything else?

Well, It was on the first day of Operation Santa Claus in December 02 and I was due on air at 9am. I had been out the night before and was feeling a bit rough and so ended up walking into the building bang on 9 and went straight to the mic to read my first auction item. It was a bottle of champagne, I meant to say "There's nothing like blowing the cork of a bottle of champagne first thing in the morning at this time of year", but it came out as " there's nothing like blowing a cock first thing in the morning" there was this strange silence around the building followed by everyone saying oh my god! My poor boss just looked at me, covered his face with his hands and walked off, I thought that was going to be another P45 moment!

Where is Jono now?

Jono can currently be found presenting the afternoon show on Gold in Norfolk and North Suffolk from 12 till 4pm.
